State Hiring Timeline Tracker
Understand the 5-6 month hiring process
State hiring is SLOW compared to tech. Between applying and getting hired is typically 5-6 months. Track where you are at each stage.
Your Application Status: Exam Results Received
Month 1: January
Step 1: Apply & Exam Announcement
Job posted on CalCareers.ca.gov. You pass the STD 678 initial review and are invited to take the civil service exam.
Month 2: February
Step 2: Take the Civil Service Exam
You take the 2PBBL exam (100 questions, 3 hours). Results posted within 2 weeks. You score 78 (passing score is 70+).
Month 3-4: March-April
Step 3: You're On the Eligibility List
HR reviews qualified candidates in rank order. They may interview top 10-15 candidates. CalHR is slow—this stage takes 4-8 weeks. You may not hear anything, which is NORMAL.
Month 4-5: April-May
Step 4: Interview (if selected)
If you make the top tier, you get an interview call. Usually a panel of 2-3 people. They ask about your experience and how you'd handle State scenarios.
Month 5-6: May-June
Step 5: Job Offer & Background Check
After interview, top candidate gets a conditional offer. Background check (7-10 days). Then final offer if all clear.
Month 6+: June
Step 6: Start Date
Negotiated with hiring manager. Usually 2-4 weeks after offer letter.
Stage 3 (Eligibility List) Delays:
- HR has to screen 100+ applications
- Multiple departments may be hiring from the same exam pool
- Vacancies may be frozen due to budget
- Managers can take weeks to decide who to interview
What's NOT Happening While You Wait:
- They're not rejecting you silently
- They're not contacting references yet
- You haven't been disqualified
